It’s time to break up with the distractions.

I am a mama, wife and CEO. On any given day, I manage my own schedule, my kiddos schedule, my team, the nanny, the dog, the house, and our tenants all while running a business. Let me just tell you, it is a challenge and on any given day there are seriously thousands of distractions. Perhaps you can relate?

I work from a home office, which if you are a mama and have kids home for the summer you know EXACTLY how challenging that can be on top of all the other usual things you have to juggle on any given day.

I’ve been lucky enough to double my business every year for the past three years, with the goal of making that happen again this next year. While chatting with a client this morning, it dawned on me that as I’ve grown and my business has grown, I’ve broken up with my distractions. The more disciplined I’ve become about starting and finishing only one thing the more successful I continue to become.

My break up with distractions started back in 2017 after my second son was born. It was by accident more than anything as I just wanted to be more present with the kids. So I started setting my phone to airplane mode when I was done with work.

As the time went on, I got more and more intentional with it, turning off all of the notifications on my phone, removing email from my device.

Next came turning on do not disturb throughout the day and setting up favorites on my device and a communications policy for clients that went out with all contracts.

Followed by a conversation with my husband and team around how to communicate throughout the day, what to do if there is an emergency and creating expectations around what needs an immediate response and what doesn’t.

This year, I’ve worked to be incredibly intentional around my time on Facebook and email. Closing the tabs when I’m not using them so I’m not distracted by the sounds. Logging into email to check it at specific times, same goes for facebook.

So hey distractions, it’s not you. It’s me. I have REALLY big goals and I can’t be driven by you and your distraction driven agenda. It’s time for me to focus.

I share this because there are distractions everywhere…..and you can either let your day be run by the distractions or you can run the day. The choice is yours. I choose to run the day!
